History of
leader: He is Canada’s 22nd
prime minister. He became the prime minister on Feb 6th,
2006. He was first elected to the house of commons in 1993. He
stepped down in 1997 to become the vice president of the National
Citizens Coalition. In 2002, he won the leader ship of the Canadian
Alliance and returned to the house as MP for Calgary. In 2003, the
Canadian Alliance and the Progressive Party of Canada became united
and created the New Conservative Party of Canada. The conservatives
gained 25 seats in the 2004 federal election under his leadership. In
2006 he and his party were elected to form a conservative government
in the first time in 13 years. He was re-elected in 2008 and 2011
winning more seats each time.
He is a piano player,
enjoys rock music, loves cats and curling, has worked for almost
every major Canadian newspaper and is learning Spanish. He makes very good decisions regarding some important issues like Abortion or Same sex marriage.
Ideologies:
Conservatives believe that individuals are better suited to live
their lives. They think that small businesses and cooperation is the
key to Canada’s economies success. They push for lower taxes so the
money can stay in people’s hands and so people can use the money to
create jobs. They believe in a smaller government. They are a right wing party.
Opinion: The conservative party has some good points and some bad points. I do like them because of their right wing ideologies. Lower taxes, more small businesses and a smaller government are great. Individuals are better suited to live their lives, so why have a larger government. With a smaller government, many people in Canada that live by getting money from welfare and don't work at all would have to start working. Poverty rate would drop because poor people would have a chance to work and earn money.
However like other right wing parties, Conservatives don't like change that much. They like the past traditional ways of Canada that includes the inclusion of Politics and Government.
Stephen Harper has made some excellent choices regarding making decisions about some important issues. He has said "As long as I’m prime minister we are not reopening the abortion debate" about Abortions and has decided not to ban or debate about same sex marriage in Canada.
